Michael McCarthy Award
Michael McCarthy represented Felling Cricket Club with distinction for several years, showcasing remarkable talent and leadership from an early age. He captained the junior sides across all age groups, demonstrating not only his natural ability but also a steadfast dedication to the game. It was therefore no surprise to anyone at the club when Michael became one of the youngest players ever to represent the 1st XI, making his debut at the remarkable age of just 15.
In 1998, Michael proudly enlisted in the Royal Navy. By August 2001, he was posted to HMS Manchester as a Marine Engineering Mechanic, a role he carried out with vigour, professionalism, and unwavering commitment. Tragically, on 25th October 2003, while on a tour of duty in the Caribbean, Michael suffered fatal injuries when a handrail he was leaning against collapsed during operations on board.
Michael’s loss was deeply felt by Felling Cricket Club. His discipline, dedication, and passion for cricket left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. These qualities continue to inspire and serve as a guiding example for all our junior players, past, present, and future.
In his memory, the Michael McCarthy Award was established and is regarded as the most prestigious accolade within the club. This annual award is presented to the Junior Player of the Season by a member of Michael’s family, celebrating not only outstanding performance but also the qualities of commitment, sportsmanship, and leadership that Michael embodied.
